Tired of walking to the store and to buy a new video game you only read about? Tired of reading all the previews or reviews online? The answer to everything is OnLive. A gaming-system that will change the future of gaming as we may believe the inventors.
The technology is based on high speed streaming of audio and video. It’s more advanced then the streaming service of Spotify; whom only provide you with music and some information about the artist. Basically OnLive is a console hosted on a server. You stream all the video and audio to your computer and send your keystrokes to the server. This makes having a brand new computer almost useless and saves you a lot of money. The only thing you need is a high speed connection to the internet and off you go.
Most of the latest operating systems are compatible with OnLive, because it is based on browser software. So even Linux should be compatible after a few programmers take care of the bugs in the emulation software. After the 4G network is launched, you can even play the latest games on your netbook while traveling anywhere They are already testing this technology in Singapore and it is like a broadband connection you probably have at home.
The question is: Will this service be accepted by the hardcore gamers? I personally think it will not, because of the subscription based payment the gamers have to make. Don’t you rather own the game then just play it when you’re paying. I might be wrong. As millions pay monthly to play World of Warcraft which could prove that there is a user base for subscription based gaming services. There might be a future in this gaming service.
OnLive will open for everyone in the winter of 2009. The beta is now open for US citizens. I can’t wait testing this service and tell you all about it.
